How to ramp up your social media activitySocial Networking

If you are ignoring the big three social media sites – Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, then you can be compared to someone who refused to use a telephone in the 20th century! Start today by implementing the three secrets for being more effective in your social media marketing. Be sure to spend an hour a day on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.  You can easily spread it out throughout the day by breaking each session down to 20 minutes.  By developing the habit you will be sure to be on top of your social media marketing. Secret Number 1:   Use the 80/20 rule.
  • Spend 80 percent of your time serving other people by answering questions, giving helpful tips on issues that you are expert in, sharing resources that you think others would find valuable.
  • Spend 20 percent of your time selling.  Inviting people to attend a webinar, buy a book, or whatever you are promoting.
The key is not that you are just on Facebook or Twitter, but that you are actively engaged, making connections, sharing your expertise, answering questions. That is what it is all about. Let’s take a look at how many new marketers approach social media marketing.  They flip the 80/20 rule by promoting 80 percent of the time and helping about 20 percent of the time ( if that). What happens to your fans, followers and friends?  They flee – fast.  That is the same as at a social offline party, a networking event, or a workshop; when someone spends all of their time pleading with people to buy this or that, to join your team, or to give you money.  Watch everyone run for the door. Get busy and start with the 80/20 method of social media marketing today. If you stick with the 80/20 social media rule – even for only 20 minutes a day, every day, including weekends – you will reap the benefits. Secret Number 2:  Use a monthly calendar to plan daily content themes. What questions or ideas are you going to put out there? You can post questions, quotes, articles and ideas that relate to your areas of interest and knowledge. Share some of your personal stuff too; activities, books, events going on in your life.  Remember you have to sell yourself before you can sell your business. Secret Number 3: Track your time. It is easy to fritter your day away with little to show for it.  That is no way to run a successful home business. Break the habit of wasting time by tracking your time.  For three days carry a small notebook and track every single thing you do and how long it takes.  This is an old trick, but it works.  You will probably be surprised by how much time you really do have. Here is what happens if you do not track your time:  You check-in to Facebook and visit a friend’s profile and then one thing leads to another and 45 minutes later you log out of Facebook without having done anything truly beneficial for your business.

Successfully building a home business really is...

...all about taking a series of small, smart, consistent, deliberate decisions to generate results.  Changing how you spend a few hours each day is simply one of those small steps that can give you huge rewards. Guard your time by prioritizing what you want to accomplish and stick to it. To your success, Corinne Floyd P.S. Please like, share, and comment.

  • Spend 20 percent of your time selling.  Inviting people to attend a webinar, buy a book, or whatever you are promoting.

  1. Corinne, this is very helpful not only because of its truth but because of its simplicity. We can all do this. Your analogy of people's reluctance to embrace the telephone when it was introduced is a good one. Another would be those who resisted the personal computer. Anyone who has a business to promote should be doing this.

  2. Thanks Bob, Taking the time to social network effectively is definitely a plus for home based businesses. And really not that hard to do if the 3 Secrets are followed.

Thank you so much for the advice! The burgeoning world of social media is truly a game-changer for both businesses and non-profits, and we definitely should be making sure we're at our optimum performance in order to make the most of it.
