Social Media Strategy

In 2011 the social media marketing report estimated 67% of all marketers have actively increased and strengthen their social media channels. As more and more of the larger companies work to integrate, implement and expand their social media strategy into their overall corporate marketing plans, it is essential that those wishing to start a successful home business do the same. For without a well thought out plan or strategy, your presence in the world of social media might as well be nonexistent.

The question that needs to be answered is, how do you develop a strategy that best encompasses the characteristics that are unique to your target audience?

Here are some tips to guide and help you get off to a quick and productive start creating and implementing your social media strategy.

A Word of Caution

One word of caution whether you're representing a large company or you're simply starting a business from home, it is absolutely imperative that you believe in the power of social media and are not simply following the crowd because you feel you "need to." It's imperative that you understand the power of social media, its potential, and that the primary goal is not to market your products and service.

It's also critical that everyone in your business understand using social media is not a temporary marketing strategy; but that it's a long-term marketing commitment that has incalculable benefits. It’s also important to recognize the need for consistent testing and experimentation to adjust to the flow of inevitable change.

Here are some tips to help guide you as you develop your very own social media strategy:

Develop your plan: matter the size of your business you should have a business plan that defines and supports the overall goals and objectives of your company; your social media strategy should complement and enhance those goals.

Know your tribe and who you’re talking to: far too many businesses make the mistake of thinking that when it comes to social media there's really not much need for research. Nothing could be farther from the truth. You must absolutely have an action plan before you move forward, especially for the five major social media platforms. Build and strengthen your social media relationships: Make a point of attending events, on and off-line, that are relevant to your target audience. Whether it's an online live web conference or a face-to-face event make your brand and presence known.

Test, test and measure: In order to adjust to the flow of inevitable change is absolutely necessary that you measure your success. Some of the metrics are:

Customer interaction and receptivity to your social media campaign

The growth of your business or brand presence across social multiple media platforms

Remember, while having lots of fans is wonderful; do not use the number of likes and followers as your measure of success. It is far more profitable to you and your business to have a smaller more engaged group of fans who are actively engaged on your platform.

Rinse, repeat and improve: You need to measure your success and, perhaps more importantly, identify those places that need improvement. Excellent article Tom! Knowing your target market, checking out what your competition is doing and checking the effectiveness of your ads are so important!

Social Media Marketing is no different than marketing your business off line. Basically the same rules apply. The most important principle to growing any business is building relationships and word of mouth advertising. When starting out, most online businesses try to use every social platform rather than adapting to one at a time and developing a strategy that works best for their business. Thanks for a very helpful post Tom.
