In 2011 the social media marketing report estimated 67% of all marketers have actively increased and strengthen their social media channels. As more and more of the larger companies work to integrate, implement and expand their social media strategy into their overall corporate marketing plans, it is essential that those wishing to start a successful home business do the same. For without a well thought out plan or strategy, your presence in the world of social media might as well be nonexistent.
The question that needs to be answered is, how do you develop a strategy that best encompasses the characteristics that are unique to your target audience?
Here are some tips to guide and help you get off to a quick and productive start creating and implementing your social media strategy.
A Word of Caution
One word of caution whether you're representing a large company or you're simply starting a business from home, it is absolutely imperative that you believe in the power of social media and are not simply following the crowd because you feel you "need to." It's imperative that you understand the power of social media, its potential, and that the primary goal is not to market your products and service.
It's also critical that everyone in your business understand using social media is not a temporary marketing strategy; but that it's a long-term marketing commitment that has incalculable benefits. It’s also important to recognize the need for consistent testing and experimentation to adjust to the flow of inevitable change.
Here are some tips to help guide you as you develop your very own social media strategy:
Develop your plan: matter the size of your business you should have a business plan that defines and supports the overall goals and objectives of your company; your social media strategy should complement and enhance those goals.
Know your tribe and who you’re talking to: far too many businesses make the mistake of thinking that when it comes to social media there's really not much need for research. Nothing could be farther from the truth. You must absolutely have an action plan before you move forward, especially for the five major social media platforms. Just as you would in your overall business plan you must know who the competition is and understand your target audience.
It's who you know and keeping track of them: A well-developed social media campaign should begin, naturally enough, by developing social relationships. A successful social media campaign manager will keep an accurate database of contacts and content. Begin by establishing connections and following conversations that are relevant to your niche. Keep a list of those who are leaders and of the conversations and topics that they participate in.
Play nice with others: It's imperative that you participate by joining relevant groups and communities. By answering questions, stating your opinions and offering help, you will begin to build a reputation as a thought leader in expert in your field.
Build and strengthen your social media relationships: Make a point of attending events, on and off-line, that are relevant to your target audience. Whether it's an online live web conference or a face-to-face event make your brand and presence known.
Test, test and measure: In order to adjust to the flow of inevitable change is absolutely necessary that you measure your success. Some of the metrics are:
The amount traffic to the blog or website
Customer interaction and receptivity to your social media campaign
The growth of your business or brand presence across social multiple media platforms
Remember, while having lots of fans is wonderful; do not use the number of likes and followers as your measure of success. It is far more profitable to you and your business to have a smaller more engaged group of fans who are actively engaged on your platform.
Rinse, repeat and improve: You need to measure your success and, perhaps more importantly, identify those places that need improvement. You will always learn as much from those things that don't work then from those that do. In order to adapt to the inevitable flow of change you need to analyze and adapt your overall social media strategy by identifying key areas where improvement can be made.
Just as your social media plan is a long-term ongoing process, so to should the measurement of your successes and challenges, be an ongoing long-term practice.
